Meghan Markle’s recent appearance at Paris Fashion Week has stirred controversy, with a royal expert accusing the Duchess of Sussex of contradicting her public image as a humanitarian. British royal commentator Hilary Fordwich, speaking to Fox News Digital, said Markle’s decision to attend high-profile fashion events clashes with the values she often promotes.
Fordwich remarked, “Instead of focusing on … charitable pursuits or anything truly transformative to rectify her reputation … she is reverting to glitzy, high-profiled events in an attempt to reset public perception.” She added, “Unfortunately for her, Hollywood is unforgiving, so a third act isn’t likely to succeed.”
The remarks come as Meghan continues to reshape her public and professional identity following her departure from royal duties in 2020. While she and Prince Harry have launched various projects under their Archewell foundation, critics say her growing presence at celebrity events undermines her philanthropic messaging.

Fordwich’s comments also follow Meghan’s own recent statements about feeling “inauthentic” during her time in the U.K. In a candid conversation shared on the Bloomberg Originals YouTube channel, the Duchess reflected on how royal expectations affected her ability to express herself.
“I think it was probably different several years ago when I couldn’t be as vocal and I had to wear nude pantyhose all the time,” Meghan said, referencing royal protocol. “Let’s be honest, that’s not very me. I hadn’t seen pantyhose since movies in the eighties when they came in that little egg,” she added, calling the experience “a little bit inauthentic.”
She continued, “But that’s a silly example, but it is an example of when you’re able to dress the way you wanna dress and you’re able to say the things that are true and you’re able to show up in the space really organically, that’s being comfortable in your own skin.”

Observers say Meghan’s Paris appearance—complete with designer outfits and front-row seats—reflects a return to the glitz of her pre-royal life in Hollywood. Supporters, however, argue that she is free to enjoy both fashion and philanthropy without being held to different standards.
While opinions remain divided, Fordwich’s critique underscores the ongoing challenge Meghan faces in balancing her celebrity image with her humanitarian ambitions. The Duchess, who has spoken often about authenticity and empowerment, now finds herself once again at the center of a debate about how her public choices align with her personal message.
