Meghan Markle opened up about the challenges of constant public scrutiny and shared a powerful piece of advice from her close friend Serena Williams during a heartfelt appearance on the Aspire podcast.
Speaking with host Emma Grede, the Duchess of Sussex spoke candidly about the emotional toll of being in the spotlight and how she has learned to manage the “peaks and valleys” of public life.
One strategy that keeps her grounded, Meghan revealed, is pausing to reflect during difficult moments. “I’ve learned to ask myself, ‘What’s the why?’” she said, explaining how that simple question helps her stay focused and resilient amid widespread criticism and misinformation.
The conversation quickly turned to Meghan’s ongoing battle with negative press and false narratives. Recalling how she’s often misunderstood or misrepresented, Meghan said she now chooses to “rewrite” her own story and encourages people to “tell the truth” about her, rather than accept false headlines.
Host Emma Grede empathized with the Duchess’s experience, asking, “Is there ever a part of you that’s like, ‘Just leave me alone?’” She noted how it must be exhausting to deal with people “lying about [her] all the time.”
Meghan acknowledged those feelings but shared that personal growth and inner work have helped her navigate the pressure. “It’s happening for a reason,” she said. “My dear friend Serena [Williams] … she told me years ago, ‘A lie can’t live forever.’”
“Eight years is a long time, but not forever,” Meghan added, referring to the ongoing public interest in her and Prince Harry’s life since stepping back from royal duties, Daily Mail reported.
The Duchess also spoke about her recent return to social media and her desire to live—and share—a more authentic version of her life. She referenced a lighthearted video she posted dancing in the hospital before giving birth to her daughter, Lilibet, on her fourth birthday.
“It’s also a really great reminder that, with all the noise or whatever people do, there’s still a whole life,” she said. “A real, authentic, fun life that’s happening behind the scenes.”
Now back on social media, Meghan said she’s grateful to have a platform where she can express herself freely. “I have a place where I can share it on my own terms,” she said.
Her words offered a rare, unfiltered glimpse into her mindset, resilience, and the power of truth, even in the face of relentless public judgment.
