Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton are compared over their children

Meghan Markle is facing renewed scrutiny online following a birthday tribute to her son, Prince Archie, as social media users accuse her of imitating the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton. On May 6, Meghan shared a heartfelt Instagram post featuring a new photo of Archie to mark his sixth birthday. The caption read simply, “Our son. Our sun,” followed by, “Happy 6th birthday to Archie!”

However, what might have seemed like a touching moment quickly stirred backlash from some royal watchers who claimed the Duchess of Sussex was mimicking Kate’s approach to celebrating royal children’s birthdays through carefully timed public photos.

Critics pointed to the timing of Meghan’s post, which came shortly after images of Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis were shared from their appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony during a recent royal event. The photos, widely circulated by royal media outlets, showed the Wales children during an official engagement, a long-standing tradition for senior members of the royal family.

“Thinking that she is taking them because Princess Kate does,” one user posted on X (formerly Twitter). “Only difference is that the Princess of Wales takes way better photos and doesn’t hide who her children are. The fact is her children are way more high profile than Meghan and Harry’s!”

Another user bluntly asked, “Does Meghan have no original ideas?” while a third added, “I wonder whose idea it was to release pictures to mark a royal child’s birthday…”

The timing also raised eyebrows. “Right after the other royal children were pictured standing on a balcony,” one commenter noted, suggesting the Sussexes were attempting to steal the spotlight.

While Meghan and Prince Harry stepped back from their senior royal roles in 2020 and have since relocated to the United States, they continue to draw intense public interest—and criticism—especially when their actions echo traditional royal protocols.

Unlike Kate Middleton, who is known for photographing her children herself and releasing the images through official royal channels, Meghan and Harry have taken a more private route with their children. Images of Archie and his younger sister, Princess Lilibet, are rarely shared publicly, and when they are, the couple often exercises greater control over the timing and setting.

Despite the criticism, many fans celebrated Archie’s milestone with supportive messages. Still, the online backlash highlights the ongoing divide in public opinion surrounding the Sussexes, and how even a birthday post can reignite royal comparisons.
