King Charles’ reign faces new challenge: Is monarchy still relevant?

King Charles has faced a series of unexpected challenges since ascending to the British throne in 2022, and questions about the future of the monarchy continue to surface even as he presses on with his duties.

While earlier controversies and personal setbacks have yet to fully subside, new scrutiny has emerged following the release of a BBC documentary series by veteran broadcaster David Dimbleby. The three-part programme, What’s the Monarchy for?, has reignited debate about the relevance, influence and purpose of the royal institution in modern Britain, with King Charles at the center of the discussion.

Dimbleby’s series directly examines the role and power of the monarch, raising uncomfortable questions about how much authority the king truly holds. At one point, he compares King Charles to the Wizard of Oz, suggesting a figure who appears powerful but may, in reality, wield little direct influence.

The documentary explores the monarchy’s so-called “soft power,” particularly in the realm of diplomacy, and asks whether the institution survives because of genuine public affection or simple apathy. Through interviews with historians, politicians and anti-monarchy campaigners, Dimbleby presents competing arguments about whether the royal family still serves a meaningful purpose, as per HELLO! Magazine.

The series raises broader questions about tradition, democracy and accountability, especially as Britain navigates social change and political uncertainty. Contributors examine how the monarchy fits into a society that increasingly values transparency and elected authority, while still maintaining a deep attachment to ceremonial continuity.

Dimbleby also reflects on the enduring allure of the Crown itself, referencing the “mysticism about monarchy” and adding that “that is what he’s fascinated by; it’s what most royal watchers are fascinated by, I would say.” The documentary suggests that this mystique has long shielded the institution from deeper scrutiny, even as its practical role becomes harder to define.

At the same time, Dimbleby does not shy away from blunt questions. “What role is there for our unelected head of state?” he asks during the series. “Or more bluntly, what is the point of the monarchy? What does the monarchy serve for?”

These questions land at a sensitive moment for King Charles, whose reign has already been shaped by public expectations of modernization and restraint. Unlike his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, Charles inherited a monarchy under far greater pressure to justify its place in a rapidly changing Britain.

Despite the debate stirred by the documentary, the king has shown no sign of slowing down, continuing his engagements and public duties amid growing scrutiny. Whether the renewed conversation sparked by What’s the Monarchy for? leads to meaningful change remains to be seen, but it underscores a central tension of Charles’ reign: preserving tradition while convincing the public that the monarchy still matters.
