King Charles is being urged to open lines of communication with Prince Harry amid growing concerns that their strained relationship may have deeper constitutional implications, according to a royal expert. Reports have circulated in recent weeks that His Majesty has been refusing to engage directly with his youngest son, following the Duke of Sussex’s recent legal defeat in his battle over UK security arrangements. While many observers see this as a private family matter, critics say the issue extends beyond the personal.
Graham Smith, chief executive of the anti-monarchy group Republic, argues that the monarch has a constitutional obligation to maintain access for members of the peerage, including Prince Harry, due to his title as the Duke of Sussex.

“I imagine that most people would view Charles not speaking to Harry as a family matter, but there are constitutional implications,” Smith told reporters. “Harry is a Duke and therefore a Peer. Harry is one of the first people to appear in the Roll of the Peerage,” he continued, referring to the formal register of noble titles.
“Peers have the right to access the monarch. So if Harry wants to meet his dad, the constitution says he must be able to.” Smith emphasized that if King Charles refused to speak to Prince Harry entirely, as multiple media outlets have reported, it would raise serious questions about the King’s adherence to traditional constitutional norms.

“If Charles is refusing to speak to Harry at all as media reports appear to suggest, then that would seem inconsistent with the law and the constitution of this country,” Smith added.
The public rift between King Charles and Prince Harry has drawn increasing attention since Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped back from royal duties in 2020. While the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have established a new life in the United States, tensions with the royal family, particularly regarding media scrutiny, security, and titles, have remained high-profile.

Harry’s recent legal defeat in his efforts to secure publicly funded police protection while in the UK has only added to the friction. The case reignited debate around his royal status and ongoing obligations, both personal and constitutional.

As King Charles navigates the responsibilities of his reign, critics say silence, particularly toward members of his own royal house, may be more than a private matter; it may challenge the very traditions he is sworn to uphold.
