Kate Middleton’s Clever Tactic to Dodge Personal Questions Revealed by Rami Malek

Despite being two of the most high-profile figures in the world, Prince William and Kate Middleton are famously protective when it comes to their children’s privacy. Though the Prince and Princess of Wales occasionally share heartwarming anecdotes about Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, they remain careful not to reveal too much.

From Prince William recounting Charlotte’s proud boast to the England Lionesses about her goalkeeping skills to Kate sharing young Louis’ words following Queen Elizabeth’s passing, these glimpses into their family life are always carefully curated. But when faced with spontaneous or personal questions in public, Kate reportedly has a clever and graceful way of deflecting them—something actor Rami Malek once discovered firsthand.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Malek recounted a humorous exchange with the Princess of Wales at the 2019 BAFTA Awards, where he won Best Actor for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody.

At the time, Prince Louis had only recently been born, and Malek made a light-hearted offer to the royal couple. “The funniest thing about that was, I said, ‘If you ever need a day off, some time off, I’m back-up for you,’” he told the audience. When Kate seemed surprised, he elaborated, “I can babysit, you guys go out, have a good time.”

He followed up with a question about Prince Louis, asking Kate, “You just had a baby, right?”—a comment he admitted caught her slightly off guard. That’s when Kate subtly shifted the focus away from herself. “She said, ‘How are you doing?’” Malek recalled. “And I’m like, ‘No, how are you?’ And in the most regal, elegant way, she gave me a look.”

He praised her poised response, saying, “They’re so careful. But it was so cool. I think I caught her off guard for a second. And, you know, had that look of – in the most elegant, professional, royal way – ‘Yes, it’s a lot, having a kid.’” Despite the unexpected moment, the royals appeared to appreciate Malek’s frankness. Prince William later invited him to co-host the Earthshot Prize Awards ceremony in Boston.

Rami isn’t alone in his admiration. Actress Reese Witherspoon shared a glowing account of meeting Kate in her memoir Whiskey in a Teacup, recalling, “She was just lovely and warm, elegant and composed… She’s a very compassionate, socially conscious, deeply caring person.” Whether through grace, charm, or clever conversation, Kate Middleton continues to win admirers worldwide—all while fiercely guarding the privacy of her young family.
