Kate Middleton Mistaken for an Assistant and Her Response was Priceless

Despite being one of the most recognized women in the world, the Princess of Wales once found herself mistaken for something far less glamorous—her husband’s assistant. True to form, Princess Kate responded with grace and humor. The memorable moment occurred in 2020 during a royal visit to Shire Hall Care Home in Cardiff.

While Prince William and Princess Kate were engaging with residents, one senior guest, Joan Drew-Smith, pointed to Kate and asked William, “Is that your assistant?” Kate didn’t miss a beat, laughing along with the group and replying, “Well, I am your assistant. I have been for a long time!” The light-hearted moment left everyone in stitches and highlighted the princess’s down-to-earth charm.

Given their global status and constant media coverage, it’s hard to imagine the royal couple being unrecognizable. With their faces regularly featured on social media, television, and newspaper front pages, such a case of mistaken identity is rare, but it allowed Kate to showcase her trademark wit, as told Daily Express.

Kate’s sense of humor and dedication to her role were also on display during her most recent royal engagement. Last Thursday, she attended the official naming ceremony of HMS Glasgow, a state-of-the-art Type 26 anti-submarine frigate, at BAE Systems’ shipyard in Scotstoun, Glasgow. The princess, who was appointed sponsor of the vessel in June 2021, took part in the traditional naming ritual by smashing a bottle of whisky against the ship’s hull—a symbolic gesture believed to bring good luck.

Following the ceremony, William and Kate met with representatives from BAE Systems and the Royal Navy to discuss the ship’s capabilities and its role in protecting the UK’s aircraft carriers. The event came just days after the princess made another public appearance at a Buckingham Palace garden party, her first since entering remission from cancer.

Kate had missed the 2024 garden party season while undergoing treatment, during what Prince William has described as a “brutal” year for the family. Among the guests at the garden party was the family of 17-year-old Liz Hatton, an aspiring photographer who died in November from a rare and aggressive cancer, desmoplastic small round cell tumour.

Kate had previously invited Liz to Windsor Castle to photograph Prince William at an investiture, a gesture that left a lasting impact. The Princess of Wales, dressed in a yellow Emilia Wickstead dress and a Philip Treacy hat, attended the event unannounced, in keeping with garden party tradition. Through humor, resilience, and heartfelt public service, Kate continues to endear herself to people across the UK and beyond.
