Prince Harry received a surprising and, perhaps, disappointing reaction from his late mother, Princess Diana’s family, when he first introduced them to Meghan Markle, according to royal biographer Tom Bower.
In his book Meghan, Harry and the War Between the Windsors, Bower revealed that Harry had high hopes that his mother’s side of the family would see a kindred spirit in Meghan. Instead, the response was far from what he had expected.

According to the Daily Express, Harry assumed that Diana’s family and friends would see a similarity between Diana and his fiancée. Both, he said, shared the same problems,” Bower wrote. “He was so disappointed. No one agreed that his vulnerable mother had anything in common with his girlfriend.”
The biographer went on to explain that the sentiment among Diana’s relatives extended beyond skepticism. “More discomforting for him, they thought Meghan would not fit in with the Royal Family,” he added.

Prior to marrying Meghan, Prince Harry reportedly sought the approval of his maternal aunts, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes, as well as his uncle, Charles Spencer. According to Bower, Spencer voiced serious concerns and advised Harry not to rush into the marriage.
“His advice provoked a bitter reaction: ‘This was going to be really hard,’” Bower wrote, noting Harry’s frustration at the pushback he received while trying to establish Meghan’s place in the family.
Despite the unease from Diana’s relatives, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle married in a widely celebrated royal ceremony in 2018. Just two years later, the couple stepped down from their roles as senior working royals and relocated to Montecito, California. They now live there with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Though his mother’s family may have had their doubts, Harry has consistently drawn comparisons between his wife and Princess Diana. In the 2022 Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, he openly reflected on the qualities that remind him of his mother.
“So much of what Meghan is and how she is, is so similar to my mum,” Harry said. “She has the same compassion, the same empathy, the same confidence. She has this warmth about her.” While the couple continues to face public scrutiny and strained royal relations, Harry’s belief in the bond between Meghan and Diana’s legacy remains unwavering, even in the face of family skepticism.
