Prince Harry Escapes to Botswana With Meghan for Quiet Family Reunion

Prince Harry recently made an unannounced detour during his visit to Angola, opting for a more personal and private stop in Botswana—a country deeply significant to both him and his wife, Meghan Markle. According to a source who spoke with the Mail on Sunday, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex took time away from official engagements to reconnect with close friends and revisit the place where their romance first began.

Botswana holds special meaning for the couple, who have often cited it as the foundation of their early relationship. During their quiet getaway, Harry reportedly spent time with Tania “TJ” Jenkins and her husband Mike, whom he considers part of his extended family.

“This time he took some more time and space, and made the trip into a week-long visit to reconnect with old friends and get some headspace away from his phone and emails,” the insider said. “He went off comms for two days or so.”

The visit offered a rare opportunity for the prince to unwind, far from the pressures of public life and the constant connectivity of the digital world. “It was a good moment for Harry to take some time away from everything,” the source added. “Enjoying total peace of mind and being somewhere so remote that he couldn’t even get emails or texts or calls.”

The trip was not only a personal retreat for Prince Harry but also a chance to share a meaningful part of his past with Meghan. The couple has long spoken fondly of Botswana as a place of solace and connection. Their early courtship included a now-famous trip to the African nation, where they camped under the stars and bonded away from the spotlight.

In the couple’s Netflix docuseries, Harry recalled his deep emotional ties to the country. “I’ve got a second family out there. A group of friends that literally brought me up,” he said, reflecting on the relationships he formed there during his youth and early adulthood.

While their visit to Botswana was deliberately low-key and off-the-radar, it underscores the importance of the region in the Sussexes’ personal lives. The couple, now based in California with their two children, has occasionally returned to Africa, where Harry has long been involved in conservation and charitable work.

This latest visit, however, appears to have been purely personal—a chance for the Duke and Duchess to reconnect with people and places that have shaped their journey, both individually and as a couple.
