It’s been 27 years since Princess Diana’s tragic death, yet her legacy continues to captivate a new generation. From TikTok tributes to Instagram accounts dedicated to her fashion, Gen Z teens and twenty-somethings are embracing Diana as a symbol of vulnerability, style, and rebellion, ensuring the People’s Princess remains more relevant than ever.
Diana’s emotional complexity and authenticity still resonate, especially as tensions between her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, dominate headlines. In a recent BBC interview, Prince Harry expressed a desire to mend family rifts, stating, “I would love reconciliation with my family.” It prompts a powerful question: how would Diana have responded?

“Doubtless, she’d have been horrified,” says author Edward White, whose new book Dianaworld explores her lasting cultural imprint. “Her sons are arguing about her legacy. William is reimagining the monarchy in her image, while Harry, arguably, defends her more radical, independent spirit.”
White suggests Diana would have made every effort to bring her sons together. Despite their differences, he believes Diana would have appreciated Meghan Markle if she saw the happiness she brought Harry. “Meghan has strategies and plans. Diana was more improvised, but if she saw Meghan made Harry happy, she’d have been well disposed towards her,” he said.
Though Diana died in 1997, her story remains deeply etched into public consciousness. “The internet is drenched in Diana,” White notes. “She spoke openly about mental health, eating disorders, and motherhood struggles. She cried in public. That level of emotional honesty was unheard of at the time.”

Her presence lives on in countless Instagram accounts showcasing her varied fashion eras—“Diana’s revenge looks,” “Diana’s sporty looks,” even “Diana’s lesbian looks.” Her image, captured endlessly by paparazzi and preserved on VHS, now inspires digital devotion.
But it’s not just her style or sadness that fuels fascination—it’s her contradictions. “She was giggly, sharp, and socially skilled, yet also bold to the point of recklessness,” says White. He recalls her secretly filming the infamous Panorama interview—an act of raw candour that reportedly upset Prince William.
Diana’s resistance to royal convention made her both revolutionary and risky. “The monarchy relies on secrecy and deference,” White explains. “Diana didn’t play by those rules. Everything was written on her face.”
In her final year, Diana was exploring new philanthropic ambitions, including the idea of an international hospice network—similar in spirit to Harry’s Invictus Games. “She was no longer just a princess,” White reflects. “She was Diana—a woman redefining herself on her own terms.”
