Things have properly kicked off in U.S. politics this week, and it’s all centred around a legal bombshell dropped by Alina Habba, the acting U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, a name that’s already got people talking, for all the wrong reasons. Habba, who only took on the interim role back in March, has caused an uproar by charging Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver with assault during a congressional visit to an immigration detention centre in Newark.
The backlash has been swift and fierce, with top Democrats tearing into Habba’s decision — and her background. She’s held flashy legal roles before, but had no actual prosecutorial experience or serious time in federal courts before stepping into one of the state’s top law enforcement jobs. That has raised serious questions about how and why this charge has come about.

Trying to justify the move, Habba put out a statement saying, “That conduct cannot be overlooked by the chief federal law enforcement official in the State of New Jersey, and it is my Constitutional obligation to ensure that our federal law enforcement is protected when executing their duties”, reported Fox News. She insisted she’d made several attempts to resolve the issue quietly, claiming, “I have persistently made efforts to address these issues without bringing criminal charges and have given Representative McIver every opportunity to come to a resolution, but she has unfortunately declined.”

McIver, unsurprisingly, isn’t having it. She hit back hard, calling the charges politically driven — a move she believes is designed to block her from doing her job. “We were fulfilling our lawful oversight responsibilities, as members of Congress have done many times before, and our visit should have been peaceful and short,” she said. “This administration will never stop me from working for the people in our district and standing up for what is right. I am thankful for the outpouring of support I have received, and I look forward to the truth being laid out clearly in court.”
But perhaps the most scathing response came from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who didn’t hold back in a late-night post on X. “Alina Habba is a partisan hack and Trump lackey who will never be confirmed as a United States Attorney,” he wrote, making it clear what he thinks of her credentials — and her motives.

Earlier that same day, Jeffries and other Democratic leaders also issued a joint statement slamming the charge as “extreme, morally bankrupt, and lacking any basis in law or fact.” It’s safe to say this legal move has thrown a political grenade — and there’s no sign it’ll quiet down anytime soon.
