“Peace is so destructive for everyone”: Trump’s confusing remarks about war and peace spark backlash

President Donald Trump raised eyebrows Thursday evening after making a baffling statement about peace that quickly spread across social media, leaving critics questioning what he meant.

The comments came as Trump returned to the United States following an appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. While speaking with reporters aboard Air Force One, he took questions about his controversial “Board of Peace” proposal for Gaza, an initiative that reportedly carries a $1 billion fee for permanent membership.

When asked about the steep cost, Trump dismissed concerns, arguing that the price tag was insignificant compared to the potential benefits. “Some of the countries have already put up much more than that. And that’s a lot of money, but it’s nothing compared to the value of peace,” he said.

Moments later, however, the president appeared to contradict himself while attempting to elaborate on the topic. “Peace is so destructive for everyone. Even countries that aren’t involved. I mean, it’s so destructive for everyone when you have wars,” he told reporters. The statement, which seemed to confuse peace with war, quickly drew online criticism and mockery.

Political observers and commentators wasted little time reacting. Former MSNBC host Keith Olbermann posted on X, “hummana hummana hummana.” YouTuber Keith Edwards was more blunt, writing, “His brain is fried.”

Others echoed the sentiment. X user Kristi Nychole wrote, “Mashed potatoes, y’all. His brain is mashed potatoes.” Oliver Alexander added, “He is out-Bidening Biden.” The progressive account Call to Activism issued a longer rebuke, stating, “BREAKING: In a shocking memory lapse, Donald Trump completely merges the words ‘war’ and ‘peace’ saying that ‘peace is destructive’ for everyone. Donald Trump is deteriorating fast and anyone who disagrees is lying to you.”

Some reactions focused less on criticism and more on confusion. Jason Riffle asked simply, “Is this supposed to make sense?” The Republicans against Trump account responded with a post containing only “???”

Writer Greg Cantwell took a darker approach, sharing the dictionary definition of dementia: “de·men·tia /dəˈmen(t)SH(ē)ə/ noun 1a condition characterized by progressive or persistent loss of intellectual functioning, especially with impairment of memory and abstract thinking, and often with personality change, resulting from organic disease of the brain.”

Writer Bill Murtagh summed up what many seemed to be thinking, posting, “So is peace ‘destructive’ or are wars’ destructive?’ I’m confused. But not as confused at this guy.”

The White House has not offered any clarification on Trump’s remarks, and the president has not addressed the backlash directly. Still, the episode has once again highlighted how even brief, off-the-cuff comments from Trump can ignite intense debate and dominate the political conversation within hours.
