President Donald Trump on Thursday announced the appointment of Fox News host and former judge Jeanine Pirro as interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, following weeks of speculation over her potential nomination to the high-profile prosecutorial role.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Pirro’s qualifications and career accomplishments while confirming her new interim role. “I am pleased to announce that Judge Jeanine Pirro will be appointed interim United States Attorney for the District of Columbia,” Trump wrote.

The former president described the longtime television host and legal analyst as someone who “excelled in all ways” during her legal career. Pirro, who gained national prominence as host of Justice with Judge Jeanine on Fox News for a decade, currently co-hosts The Five, one of the network’s most-watched programs. Trump highlighted both her media success and legal background in his announcement.
“In addition to her legal career, Jeanine previously hosted her own Fox News Show, Justice with Judge Jeanine, for ten years, and is currently Co-Host of The Five, one of the highest-rated shows on Television,” Trump added. “Jeanine is incredibly well qualified for this position, and is considered one of the Top District Attorneys in the History of the State of New York.”

Pirro’s appointment follows the failed Senate confirmation of Trump’s original nominee, Ed Martin, who lacked sufficient support to advance. Pirro, a staunch Trump ally and outspoken defender of his administration during his time in office, previously served as an assistant district attorney and county judge in New York, gaining a reputation for being tough on crime and highly media-savvy.
“She is in a class by herself,” Trump wrote. “Congratulations, Jeanine!”

The decision is likely to draw both praise and criticism, given Pirro’s controversial presence on cable news and her close political alignment with Trump. Supporters tout her extensive experience as a prosecutor and her ability to communicate forcefully with the public. Critics, however, are expected to question the politicization of the traditionally independent role of the U.S. attorney in the capital.
Despite being an interim appointment, the position holds significant influence, overseeing key federal prosecutions in the District of Columbia — a jurisdiction that includes many high-profile and politically sensitive cases.
Trump’s selection of Pirro reflects both loyalty and trust in longtime allies as he continues to shape the leadership landscape of federal law enforcement through his appointments.
