President Donald Trump is demanding an apology from Kamala Harris after she claimed their encounter last November “ended up being the closest presidential election in the 21st century.”
Harris made the comment Monday night on MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show, where she appeared to promote her book 107 Days, a reflection on her short-lived 2024 presidential campaign. The former vice president did not elaborate on her reasoning, but Trump quickly pushed back.
“Everyone knows this is a lie,” Trump wrote Wednesday in a Truth Social post. He pointed to his victories in the Electoral College, all seven recognized battleground states, and the popular vote. He also repeated his false claim that California’s mail-in ballot process was “rigged” against him.

Alongside his post, Trump included his county-level margin of victory and a red-tinged map that did not reflect population density. “Kamala’s ‘closest in the 21st Century’ soundbite was, like everything else in the Democrat Party, A TOTAL LIE!” he continued. “I expect an apology.”
Harris’s remark has drawn scrutiny when compared with past election data. Since 2000, seven presidential contests have taken place. By several measures, the 2024 race was not the tightest. The Electoral College margin of 312-226 ranked as the fifth smallest in that period.
In the popular vote, Trump’s 1.5 percent lead was larger than George W. Bush’s 2000 loss to Al Gore, when Gore’s margin was 0.5 percent but did not translate into an Electoral College win. Harris also fell short of other close contests when measuring “tipping point” states—the states that pushed the winner over the Electoral College threshold.

In 2000, Florida decided the presidency by just 537 votes. In 2020, Joe Biden’s narrowest path came through Georgia, Arizona, and Wisconsin, which he carried by a combined 42,918 votes. By contrast, Trump’s 2024 victories in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania amounted to a combined margin of 229,766 votes.
Harris’ office has not yet responded to requests for clarification or comment. The Daily Beast reported that questions sent to her team asked for evidence supporting her claim, as well as whether she would consider apologizing.
For now, Trump continues to insist that Harris retract her statement. The dispute adds a new chapter to the ongoing political rivalry between the two figures, with both sides framing the 2024 contest in sharply different terms.
