On Memorial Day, a national day of reflection and remembrance, President Donald Trump ignited fresh controversy by veering between solemn tribute, political attacks, and leisure activities. Speaking Monday at Arlington National Cemetery, Trump honored fallen U.S. service members with a traditional address.
“Their valor gave us the freest, greatest, and most noble republic ever to exist on the face of the earth, a republic that I am fixing after a long and hard four years,” Trump said during the ceremony. However, moments earlier, he had addressed supporters by saying, “enjoy” the speech, an oddly casual tone for the solemn occasion. His remarks soon pivoted to his frequent political grievances.

“That was a hard four years we went through. Who would let that happen?” he said, abruptly shifting from honoring the fallen to criticizing President Joe Biden. Following the speech, Trump departed for his golf club in Virginia, opting to spend a portion of the national holiday on the green.
Earlier that day, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to post a combative Memorial Day message, referring to President Biden and members of the judiciary as “scum.” The incendiary language added to a growing backlash over his conduct during the holiday. “I’m beyond furious,” wrote Republican congressman and Trump critic Joe Walsh on X (formerly Twitter).
“Captain Phony Bone Spurs dodged Vietnam, sneered at POWs, and spit on the graves of the fallen by calling them ‘suckers and losers.’ No president has ever disrespected our troops like this draft-dodging bully.” Walsh’s comments referenced past controversies in which Trump allegedly disparaged military service members. Those accusations have continued to haunt the president, particularly on days of national military remembrance.

The backlash on social media was swift and widespread. The account Patriot Takes posted, “Trump to Spend Majority of Memorial Day at Golf Club. The man who cited bone spurs to avoid Vietnam will spend more time golfing than honoring the fallen this Memorial Day.” Children’s author Scott Howard added, “Through Memorial Day and D-Day, I’ve felt especially disturbed by Veterans who support Trump.
I can only assume they like being called ‘suckers and losers’ by the lying coward with the fake bone spurs.” Another user, @aeroaceleed, claimed Trump was limping during the Arlington ceremony. When asked by reporters, Trump allegedly replied that his “bone spurs were giving him trouble again.” The day intended to unite the country in memory of its heroes instead underscored America’s political divisions, with Trump once again at the center of the storm.
