In a recent televised discussion, MSNBC host and journalist Paola Ramos highlighted what she described as a disturbing “obsession” held by senior Trump adviser Stephen Miller—one rooted in surpassing former President Barack Obama’s deportation record.
Ramos’s comments came during a weekend segment focused on the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration policies and its apparent fixation on mass deportations. “I think if you’re Stephen Miller, what really, really bothers you is still this idea that Barack Obama will always win the label of being deporter in chief, and that really bothers them,” said Ramos.

She pointed to the staggering deportation figures under the Obama administration, stating, “You know, this idea that the Obama administration deported over 3 million undocumented immigrants, which means that’s around 1,000 undocumented immigrants being deported per day. And so that is this obsession that someone like Stephen Miller has.”
Miller, who served as a key architect of former President Donald Trump’s hardline immigration stance, has long been a controversial figure. His influence was central to policies such as the travel ban on several Muslim-majority countries and the separation of migrant families at the U.S.–Mexico border.

Ramos went further in her critique, arguing that Miller’s drive is not only about numbers but also about maintaining the broader narrative that fueled Trump’s political rise. “This idea that they have to sustain the moral panic that got them elected, you know, this idea that it is that invasion, and those bad people we as Americans need to protect ourselves from the other,” she explained.
She asserted that practices such as detentions, I.C.E. raids, and expansive deportations are part of a broader political strategy. “And so those detentions, those I.C.E. raids, all of that is part of that narrative that sustains what got Donald Trump elected,” Ramos added.

The remarks have reignited debate over immigration enforcement and the politicization of migrant policy. While the Obama administration drew criticism from immigrant advocacy groups for its high deportation rates, the Trump administration took a markedly more punitive and public stance.
Ramos’s analysis adds to growing concern among critics who argue that immigration policy is being weaponized for political ends rather than rooted in comprehensive reform or humanitarian concern. As the 2024 presidential election season continues to unfold, immigration remains a central—and divisive—issue in the national dialogue.
