Former President Barack Obama reportedly distanced himself from the Democratic Party following his departure from the White House, according to a new book titled Fight: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House. Released on Tuesday, April 1, the book offers fresh insights into Obama’s strained relationship with the party he once led.
Authored by political journalists Jonathan Allen of NBC News and Amie Parnes of The Hill, Fight claims Obama was never fully aligned with the Democratic establishment and instead relied on support from “Black professionals” to rise to power. “He was never a Democratic Party loyalist,” the book asserts, contrasting Obama’s political journey with figures like Joe Biden, Bill Clinton, and Hillary Clinton.

The authors further allege that Obama’s nonprofit, Organizing for Action—established in 2012—deepened the divide within the Democratic ranks by diverting resources and influence. “Though Organizing for Action never realized his vision, it competed with the party for power and money,” the book states. One insider reportedly remarked, “Obama destroyed that s**t,” referring to the weakened state of the party post-Obama.
In the aftermath of Obama’s presidency, key Democratic leaders, including the Clintons, Biden, and former DNC chair Donna Brazile, worked to rebuild the party’s infrastructure. According to the book, this effort aimed to prevent far-left factions from overtaking the party. “By helping install party loyalists at the national and state committees over the course of years, these establishment Democrats kept progressive outsiders at bay,” the authors write.

One Black Biden ally quoted in the book emphasized the role of the Clintons: “Bill and Hillary motherf**ing Clinton.” The book also details Obama’s hesitation in endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 race. Reportedly, Obama delayed his endorsement by five days, which allegedly created tension between him and Harris.
Fox News reports that Obama doubted Harris’s ability to defeat former President Donald Trump. Co-author Jonathan Allen, appearing on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, revealed, “President Obama absolutely did not think that Joe Biden should continue, according to our sources close to President Obama. And he also didn’t want Kamala Harris to be the replacement for Biden.”

Allen added, “He didn’t think that she was the best choice for Democrats, and he worked really behind the scenes for a long time to try to have a mini-primary, or an open convention. [He] did not have faith in her ability to win the election.” As the Democratic Party enters a new chapter, the book raises significant questions about the internal dynamics and influence of its most prominent figures.
