Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) filed a defamation lawsuit against Eric Bowman on Monday, accusing him of making false and damaging statements about her. The lawsuit, which was submitted to the Charleston court, follows a series of social media posts by Bowman that Mace claims were “objectively false” and caused harm to her reputation and career.
Mace’s legal action stems from accusations Bowman made in multiple social media posts, which she argues were made with “reckless disregard for the truth.” According to The State, the lawsuit alleges that Bowman published these statements without attempting to verify their accuracy.

The congresswoman further claims that Bowman’s statements were not only false but also undermined both her ability to perform her duties as a lawmaker and the public’s confidence in her. The lawsuit outlines several specific posts made by Bowman, which Mace asserts are defamatory. She seeks both monetary and punitive damages for the harm caused by Bowman’s actions.
The filing contends that these false statements have tarnished her reputation, making it difficult for her to fulfill her role effectively. This legal battle follows a public accusation Mace made during a February floor speech in the House of Representatives, in which she named Bowman along with three other men from South Carolina.

Mace accused these men of being involved in criminal activities, including drugging, filming, and sexually assaulting women. During her speech, Mace also expressed concern that she herself might have been a victim of these crimes.
Bowman, who was one of the men named by Mace, has now become the subject of the defamation lawsuit. The filing claims that he acted maliciously in making public statements that falsely implicated the congresswoman and caused reputational damage.
Mace’s lawsuit is the second legal action stemming from her February speech. In March, Brian Musgrave, another man mentioned in her speech, filed a defamation lawsuit against Mace. Musgrave denied any involvement in the alleged criminal activities and rejected Mace’s claims. Like Bowman, Musgrave’s lawsuit challenges statements Mace made outside of the House floor, including on her social media accounts.

While Mace’s speech in the House is protected by the Constitution’s “speech and debate” clause, which shields lawmakers from legal repercussions for their actions on the floor, the lawsuits center on statements made outside the chamber. The legal actions highlight the tensions surrounding Mace’s accusations and the potential consequences of public statements made by politicians regarding sensitive issues.
As the lawsuits unfold, both Mace and Bowman, as well as other individuals mentioned in the congresswoman’s speech, will likely continue to face intense scrutiny over the allegations and the legal battles they are now involved in.
