Michelle Obama Gets Candid About Her Mother’s Death and the Moment Barack Told Her ‘You’re Next Up’

Former First Lady Michelle Obama offered a heartfelt reflection on the passing of her mother, Marian Robinson, during a new episode of Michelle Obama: The Light Podcast, co-hosted with her brother, Craig Robinson. Robinson passed away in May 2024 at the age of 86, and the loss has profoundly impacted the Obama family.

In the emotional episode, Michelle spoke candidly about how the family is adjusting and the reality of grief. She shared a moment with her husband, former President Barack Obama, that brought the weight of generational transition into sharp focus.

“I guess if anything, with mom’s loss, I think that — thank God you’re my big brother and I have a husband who’s older,” Michelle said to Craig during the podcast. “Barack was saying, you know, ‘Well, you’re next up.’ I was like, ‘I’m not ready to be next up.’ I told him, ‘You’re next up and Craig is next up.’ I delegate that power to you,” she added, according to Page Six.

Craig Robinson, who is also grieving the loss of their father, Fraser C. Robinson III, who died in 1991, noted that their mother had long prepared them for her passing. “The listeners should know that Mom’s been threatening to drop dead for 20 years,” Craig said with a touch of humor.

“She has been preparing us for this. So, she left very direct instructions on what she wanted and how she wanted things to be. We had to take that into account.” Michelle acknowledged the profound emotional shift that comes with losing both parents. “It’s a major shift in your life. I don’t care how old you get. Mom and dad are mom and dad,” she said.

She also shared what it was like caring for her mother in her later years. “Even when I was taking care of Mom, I still gotta listen to her. I can sort of boss her around, but in the end, she’s my mother,” she explained. “There’s a comfort level in that, knowing that no matter how wise or experienced I am in the world, mom always knew more.”

During the episode, Michelle also revisited past stories about her marriage, including Barack’s early financial instability and his tendency to run late. “I left my corporate firm when I met Barack,” she said. “I had somebody who was like, ‘I got your back. The risks you think you’re taking, they aren’t that crazy, and I’m here to help you.’” The episode offered listeners a poignant blend of grief, family strength, and enduring love.
