Melania Trump Urges Behavioral Assessments After Minneapolis School Shooting Leaves Two Dead

First lady Melania Trump has called for stronger efforts to identify potential school shooters before they act, following the mass shooting in Minneapolis on Wednesday that killed two children and injured 17 others.

The attack took place during a mass at Annunciation Catholic School, where police say the shooter, 23-year-old Robin Westman, opened fire. Among the victims were an 8-year-old and a 10-year-old child, both of whom died at the scene.

In a post on X, Trump wrote, “The tragic mass killing in Minnesota illuminates the need for pre-emptive intervention in identifying potential school shooters. “Early warning signs are often evident, with many individuals exhibiting concerning behaviors and making violent threats online prior to their actions,” she continued.

“To prevent future tragedies, it is crucial we look into behavioral threat assessments across all levels of society—beginning in our homes, extending through school districts, and, of course, social media platforms. Being aware of these warning signs and acting quickly can save lives and make American communities safer.”

In another post, she expressed condolences for the victims. “My heart is shattered for the families and friends of the victims of today’s senseless and depraved violent act. There is nothing that anyone can say to make your grief go away, but please know that you are not alone.

My thoughts, love, and deepest sympathy are with you during this dreadful time.” President Donald Trump ordered all flags on federal property to be flown at half-staff until August 31 in honor of the victims.

The tragedy quickly became a flashpoint in political debate. Many conservatives placed blame on what they called “the trans agenda” after the FBI confirmed the shooter was born Robert Westman. Trump’s press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, described the violence as the work of a “demonic force” that drove a “transgender maniac” to act.

Donald Trump Jr. also weighed in, echoing Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida, who wrote on X, “For years, the left has promoted radical gender ideology, ignored glaring mental health issues & spewed hateful rhetoric. This is the insanity that’s come from their movement. They must reexamine everything.” Trump Jr. reposted the comment, adding “100%.”

Not all responses followed that line. Jen Psaki, former press secretary for Joe Biden and current MSNBC host, countered during her show, The Briefing. “We have seen this play out over and over again. There is a shooting. Then come the thoughts and prayers, and then comes the attempt to shift the focus. This is what always happens.”

Psaki argued that while mental health issues, antisemitism, and political extremism exist worldwide, the United States stands apart in the frequency of mass shootings.
