Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem made a bold declaration on Sunday, insisting that the United States now belongs to “President Donald Trump” as she defended the administration’s handling of border security.
Speaking on CBS’s Face the Nation, Noem responded to host Margaret Brennan’s observation that border crossings were at a 25-year low. “There are 6,000 U.S. military personnel working at the border now,” Brennan noted. “That number could go up to 9,000 by the end of the month.”

She then pressed Noem on how long the military presence would be necessary given the declining numbers. “You know, we’ll continue the partnership with the Department of Defense, but also we’ve got partnerships with Commerce, with the Attorney General’s office,” Noem responded.
“We’ll keep them there until that border is completely secure, and we see all-time record lows of encounters.” Noem then made a striking statement about the political shift under Trump’s leadership.
“Our Border Patrol’s doing fantastic work, but we’re going to keep them there till the whole world gets the message that this isn’t Joe Biden’s world anymore,” she asserted. “This is President Donald Trump’s country where we have a border, where we have laws, and it applies equally to everybody.”

The statement underscores the administration’s hardline stance on immigration and its effort to distinguish itself from the policies of the previous administration. Noem further emphasized that the law must be applied fairly across the board.
“I think that is what is so refreshing, is that we’re not picking and choosing winners and losers anymore,” she said. “Americans have to live by the law, and so do those who come to this country.” The comments reflect the administration’s continued focus on border security as a key policy priority, even as statistics indicate a significant decrease in illegal crossings.

With the increase in military deployment at the border, the Trump administration is signaling that it intends to maintain a strict enforcement strategy. Noem’s assertion that the country belongs to Trump sparked debate, with critics questioning the implications of framing national leadership in such personal terms.
However, her remarks were welcomed by Trump supporters who view the administration’s immigration policies as a necessary corrective measure. As the administration pushes forward with its border security plans, it remains to be seen how long the military presence will continue and what benchmarks will be set for determining a “completely secure” border.
