The judge overseeing Donald Trump’s hush money trial delivered a firm admonition to the former president as the proceedings commenced. Judge Juan Merchan emphasized the importance of Trump’s attendance throughout the trial, which began on Monday, with a clear declaration of the consequences for non-compliance.

According to an NBC News report, Judge Merchan outlined the stipulations directly to Trump, making it unequivocally clear that his presence was mandatory. “If you do not show up there will be an arrest,” he stated. This stern warning set the tone for the seriousness with which the judge intended to handle the trial proceedings.

Further addressing the former president, Judge Merchan explained the repercussions of any misconduct during the trial. He noted that any disruptive behavior would not only result in removal from the courtroom but could also lead to arrest. Moreover, the judge clarified that the trial would proceed in Trump’s absence should he fail to appear or be removed due to misconduct.

The judge’s directives were comprehensive and explicit. He detailed that if Trump deliberately chose not to attend the trial on any given day, or attempted to obstruct the proceedings in any way, the legal process would continue without him.

“If you deliberately fail to appear in court when required, then any proceeding in your case, including hearing, trial and, if you are convicted, sentence, can and will continue in your absence,” Judge Merchan explained, as per the court transcript. He further cautioned that failing to appear could lead to additional charges of bail jumping, which would carry its own separate prosecution and potential punishment, irrespective of the outcome of the current case.

Additionally, Judge Merchan warned of the continuity of the trial regardless of any actions that might lead to Trump’s incarceration, such as contempt of court or other related charges. He reiterated, “If you deliberately refuse to come to court when required, or in any way deliberately obstruct or interfere with the effort to bring you to court, then, any proceeding in your case, including hearing, trial and, if you are convicted, sentence, can and will continue in your absence.”

These stringent conditions underscored the legal obligations Trump faced and highlighted the judicial system’s commitment to proceeding with the trial irrespective of his personal attendance or behavior. The judge’s warnings served as a critical reminder of the gravity and decorum expected in legal proceedings, especially in a case involving a former president and significant allegations.
