“As Usual, President Trump Was Right”: Sen. John Cornyn Fires Back at Palm Beach Ad Targeting His Record

Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) is hitting back after a new political ad aired in an unlikely location — not in Texas, but in Palm Beach, Florida, the home turf of President Donald Trump. The ad, funded by the group Preserving Texas, backs Cornyn’s likely 2026 primary challenger, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, and aims to paint Cornyn as weak on conservative values.

According to Axios, the $60,000 TV spot ran over the weekend on Trump-favored networks such as Fox News, Newsmax, and the Golf Channel — all airing in South Florida, near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. The ad slams Cornyn for his role in crafting a bipartisan gun safety bill in 2022 and features a narrator stating, “As usual, President Trump was right,” referencing the president’s past remarks labeling Cornyn a “RINO” — Republican In Name Only.

The unusual ad placement highlights a calculated attempt to win Trump’s attention — and potentially, his endorsement. As Axios noted, “Trump is a cable news junkie, and Republican candidates and interest groups are known to run ads in South Florida with an eye toward influencing him.” The strategy isn’t new: In 2020, Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie used the same tactic to sway Trump by calling his opponent a “Trump hater” in Palm Beach ads.

Cornyn, however, isn’t taking the hit lightly. In a swift response, a spokesperson for the senator blasted the attack as dishonest and politically motivated. “Corrupt Ken Paxton ordered up another mediocre campaign video that predictably lies about Senator Cornyn’s long career of strongly supporting Second Amendment rights,” the spokesperson said.

“As an avid hunter himself, Senator Cornyn supports the constitutional right to carry and always has.” The exchange is an early glimpse of what promises to be one of the most fiercely contested and expensive Senate races of the 2026 midterms. With Trump’s endorsement still considered the golden ticket in GOP primaries, the ad war may only intensify from here.

As Republican contenders jockey for influence in the MAGA era, Cornyn’s long-established seat in the Senate faces an unusually aggressive challenge — one playing out not in Texas, but in the living rooms of Mar-a-Lago.
