Joe Biden’s recent prostate cancer diagnosis has taken everyone by surprise, and now the questions are piling up. According to a spokesperson for the former president, Biden had never been diagnosed with prostate cancer before last week. His last PSA test? That was back in 2014.
The announcement came not long after President Donald Trump made waves with some pointed comments. Trump, never one to shy away from questioning his political rival’s health, said he was “surprised the public wasn’t notified a long time ago,” sparking a fresh round of speculation and whispers about a possible cover-up.

Biden’s team made it clear that the diagnosis is recent. “Prior to Friday, President Biden had never been diagnosed with prostate cancer,” his spokesperson told CNN. The statement followed Sunday’s announcement that the 82-year-old had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of the disease after a nodule was recently found.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, and it’s often caught early with PSA blood tests. But here’s where it gets a little complicated. The last time Biden had a PSA test, he was around 71 or 72, back in 2014. After age 70, regular PSA screening isn’t recommended for everyone. The US Preventive Services Task Force warns that routine tests can lead to false positives, unnecessary biopsies, and treatments that might do more harm than good.
Still, the timing has some people raising eyebrows. Trump and his allies are pressing hard, asking how an advanced cancer like this wasn’t discovered earlier, especially given the level of medical attention that former presidents usually receive. With Biden already under the microscope over concerns about his health and stamina, the news couldn’t have come at a tense moment.

And it’s not just critics who are puzzled. Even though Biden has been out of the public eye more recently, people are wondering if there were signs or if his team knew something sooner and chose not to disclose it. His office hasn’t confirmed whether he has had any other prostate exams since the 2014 test.
Meanwhile, medical experts told AFP that this kind of late-stage diagnosis isn’t totally out of the ordinary, even for someone with access to elite healthcare. Sometimes, prostate cancer can go undetected for years before showing up on tests.

With a book coming out soon that reportedly digs into Biden’s health and describes a steady physical decline, this new diagnosis is only fueling the conversation.
Despite the political noise, Biden’s team says he’s thankful for the support he’s received since the announcement. On Monday, the former president expressed gratitude for the “love and support” coming his way as he begins his fight against cancer.
