Doug Ford Slams Trump’s Trade War, Vows 25% Electricity Tariffs on U.S.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford unleashed a scathing rebuke of President Donald Trump and his ongoing trade war with Canada in an interview Thursday, vowing to move forward with 25% electricity tariffs on Americans despite Trump’s recent one-month pause on Canadian and Mexican tariffs. “Isn’t this a shame?” Ford said. “It’s an absolute mess.”

Ford made his comments during an appearance on Fox News Business, moments after Trump announced the tariff pause. However, the Canadian leader dismissed the delay as too little, too late, confirming that starting Monday, Ontario would impose 25% tariffs on electricity exports to Michigan, New York, and Minnesota.

“Three great governors – I get along well with them – great people, and I apologize to the American people,” Ford said. “There’s one person to be blamed and that’s President Trump.” Ford continued to lambast Trump for what he described as a reckless dismantling of the long-standing trade relationship between the U.S. and Canada, which he called the United States “closest friends” and “closest allies in the entire world.”

“He’s creating chaos,” Ford stated. “He ran on a mandate to lower costs, lower inflation, create more jobs – it’s the total opposite. People are going to be losing their jobs in the U.S. and in Canada, and inflation is happening already.”

Ford also pointed to the broader economic consequences of Trump’s trade policies. “The market is going downhill quicker than the American bobsled team, and it’s unacceptable,” he said. Following the interview, Ford took to his X social media account to reiterate his stance and emphasize his commitment to pushing back against Trump’s trade agenda.

“The only thing that’s certain today is more uncertainty,” he wrote. “A pause on some tariffs means nothing. Until President Trump removes the threat of tariffs for good, we will be relentless.”

With tensions between the U.S. and Canada escalating, Ford’s strong stance signals a growing rift in the economic relationship between the two countries. As Monday’s deadline approaches, the impact of Ontario’s retaliatory electricity tariffs remains to be seen, but the political and economic stakes continue to rise.
