Representative Becca Balint (D-VT) delivered a forceful critique of President Donald Trump during a Sunday appearance on MSNBC, accusing him of abandoning everyday Americans by targeting key social safety net programs.
Asked about Trump’s recent verbal attacks on judges who have ruled against him in various legal cases, Balint didn’t hold back. “He is failing in the presidency,” she declared. But Balint’s comments quickly shifted focus to a broader concern: Trump’s approach to Social Security and Medicaid.

According to her, Trump is “working in service of the billionaire class,” and his administration’s posture on these critical programs is triggering widespread public anger. “People are angry,” Balint said, adding that citizens are “absolutely outraged” at ongoing threats to essential benefits. “He’s governing by gimmicks,” she continued.
Balint warned that the Trump camp is underestimating the backlash they may face from voters who rely on these programs for basic survival. “I think that this administration is grossly underestimating the fury of people across this country who depend on Social Security and Medicaid to just get by,” she said.
She also pointed to a recent controversial remark by Trump’s Commerce Secretary, billionaire Howard Lutnick, which she said laid bare the administration’s out-of-touch attitude.

“And of course, you had Howard Lutnick, the commerce secretary, sort of giving up the game the other day when he said, oh, well, my mother wouldn’t even notice if her Social Security check didn’t come through. Give me a break,” Balint said.
She continued, “What planet are you on? We have millions of Americans right now who are depending on us to stand up for these programs that they have paid into, that they have earned.”

Balint also called out tech mogul Elon Musk for comments disparaging Social Security, tying them to a broader GOP effort to undermine the program. “And Elon Musk calling it a Ponzi scheme. Again, it is an indication of where Republicans want to go. They always want to touch Social Security. They just lie about it.”
As election season ramps up, Democrats appear poised to make the protection of Social Security and Medicaid a central theme—framing the programs not just as policy, but as a moral line in the sand.
