Just four days into President Donald Trump’s second term, Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogles, a MAGA Republican, has declared Trump’s leadership so successful that he believes the former president deserves the chance at a third term.
Ogles announced on Thursday that he is proposing a House Joint Resolution to amend the U.S. Constitution, which currently limits presidents to two elected terms under the 22nd Amendment, ratified on February 27, 1951.
This amendment formalized a two-term limit, a tradition set by George Washington and only broken by Franklin D. Roosevelt, who served four terms during the Great Depression and World War II. “President Trump’s decisive leadership stands in stark contrast to the chaos, suffering, and economic decline Americans have endured over the past four years,” Ogles said to CNBC.
“He has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal.” Ogles argued that amending the Constitution to allow for a three-term presidency would ensure the nation “can sustain the bold leadership” it needs.
He further emphasized the importance of supporting Trump’s agenda to “correct the disastrous course set by the Biden administration.” “It is imperative that we provide President Trump with every resource necessary to correct the disastrous course set by the Biden administration. President Trump has shown time and time again that his loyalty lies with the American people and our great nation above all else,” Ogles continued.
Ogles highlighted Trump’s early flurry of executive orders as evidence of his effectiveness. These include declaring a national emergency at the southern border, deploying troops to enforce border security, and expediting the construction of the U.S.-Mexico border wall.
The proposal comes as Ogles himself faces scrutiny over a financial scandal involving a questionable loan he claimed to have given his campaign three years ago. The controversy has raised questions about his credibility and could force him into legal jeopardy.
While Ogles’ push for a constitutional amendment is unlikely to succeed, given the high bar for ratification, his resolution underscores the devotion Trump commands among certain factions of the Republican Party, as well as the polarizing dynamics of his presidency.
