A Florida flight turned into a disturbing scene when a woman allegedly lashed out at a child during a flight home from Disney World. Kristy Crampton has been charged with felony child abuse after reportedly hitting a child on an Allegiant Airlines flight that left Sanford-Orlando International Airport on May 26.
According to a police report obtained by PEOPLE, officers were called after the pilot reported a disturbance on board. The plane was headed to Hagerstown, Maryland, but Crampton and others in her party had voluntarily deplaned by the time authorities arrived. They were spotted walking away from the gate.
When police questioned her, Crampton allegedly admitted to striking the child. She told officers the child had called her “fat” and referred to her as “Miss Piggy”—a reference to the Muppets character—which she found offensive. She claimed the child had been “very rude” and “disrespectful” throughout their time together.
Initially, Crampton said she only took the child’s phone away in response to the name-calling. But according to witnesses, it escalated far beyond that. Several people on board said she hit the child with her fist and a water bottle, and even slammed their head against the airplane window.
One witness told police, “The woman was not correcting the child. She was abusing [them].” They added, “She was whipping the s— out of the kid.”
Witnesses said the child tried to defend themself by covering their head during the alleged attack. Meanwhile, flight attendants reportedly did not witness the confrontation as it unfolded.
The police report also notes that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the incident.
It’s not yet confirmed how old the child is or what exact relationship they have with Crampton, though reports state they were traveling together as part of a group visiting Disney World.
Crampton was arrested and taken into custody, then released the following day, May 27, on a $10,000 bond after a court appearance before a Seminole County judge. As part of her release conditions, she was ordered not to contact the child, according to WFTV.
The incident has raised questions about how airline staff handle such situations and whether more protections or immediate actions should be implemented when it comes to in-flight behavior involving minors.
So far, Allegiant Airlines has not released a public statement regarding the incident.
For now, Crampton is facing serious legal trouble, and investigators are continuing to gather witness statements and other evidence as the case moves forward.
