Two Michigan Men Face Life Sentences for Drive-By Killing of 7-Year-Old Girl

Two Michigan men who were teenagers at the time of a deadly drive-by shooting have now been convicted of first-degree murder and could spend the rest of their lives in prison for the killing of a 7-year-old girl.

Jajuan McDonald, 21, and Justin Rouser, 23, were found guilty by a jury on Wednesday in connection with the March 2022 shooting death of Ariah Jackson. McDonald and Rouser were 17 and 19 years old when the crime was committed and now face mandatory life sentences for first-degree murder.

According to reporting by WDIV, the shooting unfolded on the afternoon of March 18, 2022, in Pontiac, Michigan. Ariah’s mother had arrived at a bus stop to pick up her children and relatives after school. Once the school bus dropped off Ariah, her sister, and two cousins, the group got into the car and began the short drive home.

As they pulled away, Ariah’s mother noticed an orange SUV following closely behind. Investigators later determined that Rouser was driving the vehicle while McDonald sat inside armed with a handgun. As the SUV closed in, McDonald opened fire on the family’s car.

McDonald fired eight shots, striking Ariah in the back of the head and grazing her mother. The other three children in the vehicle were not physically injured. Chaos followed as the wounded family managed to reach home.

WDIV reported that Ariah’s father rushed outside when the car arrived, pulled his daughter from the vehicle, and carried her into the house. Oakland County deputies soon arrived and rushed the child to the hospital, but despite emergency efforts, Ariah died shortly after arriving.

Police moved quickly to identify suspects. Rouser was located and arrested shortly after the shooting while attempting to flee from officers. McDonald turned himself in ten days later, on March 28, 2022.

Both men were charged with first-degree murder, four counts of attempted murder related to the other occupants of the car, and five counts of felony firearm. Following the trial, the jury returned guilty verdicts on all counts.

The convictions mark the end of a long legal process for Ariah’s family, who have waited years for accountability. The case drew widespread attention due to the age of the victim and the seemingly random nature of the attack.

Sentencing hearings have been scheduled separately, with McDonald set to appear on March 3 and Rouser on March 10. Prosecutors are expected to seek life sentences, reflecting the severity of the crime and the loss of a child whose life was cut short on an ordinary trip home from school.
