Oklahoma Mother Falls Asleep Drunk and Accidentally Smothers Her 5-Month-Old Son, Killing Him

A 28-year-old mother from Bixby, Oklahoma, has been charged with child neglect following the tragic death of her 5-month-old son, who police say suffocated after she fell asleep while heavily intoxicated.

According to court records, Bixby police responded to a home around 5:44 a.m. on October 18, 2025. Officers arrived to find the baby’s father performing CPR on the unresponsive infant, who was gray and not breathing, according to a probable cause affidavit.

When officers entered the bedroom, they tried to wake the baby’s mother, identified as Sarah Jamison, for nearly two minutes by yelling, using a flashlight, and shaking the bed. Police reported that Jamison smelled strongly of alcohol, spoke with slurred speech, and needed assistance walking to the couch.

In her initial comments to police, Jamison reportedly said, “If my kid is dead, I might as well be too,” and, “I said I needed help, I tried to get help.”

Jamison later told investigators the last thing she remembered was drinking a six-pack of Voodoo Ranger Juice Force beer and taking a shot of rum the night before. She said she did not recall anything after that.

According to the affidavit, Jamison admitted that although she stopped drinking during her pregnancy, she resumed about six weeks after giving birth. She told police she had been struggling with postpartum symptoms more intensely than with her previous children.

The baby’s father told investigators that he had returned home around 10 p.m. the night before. The couple drank together before Jamison took the baby to bed while he stayed on the couch. When he later went to bed, he found the infant underneath Jamison’s shoulder, unresponsive. He immediately called 911 and began CPR until officers arrived.

Both parents admitted they frequently co-slept with the baby, a practice that health officials warn can increase the risk of accidental suffocation. At 8:45 a.m., Jamison’s blood was drawn at a hospital, where her blood alcohol content was recorded at .309—nearly four times the legal limit for intoxication.

Authorities charged Jamison with child neglect in connection with her son’s death. If you or someone you know is struggling with postpartum depression or thoughts of self-harm, help is available. Call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.
