A 59-year-old local woman faces felony charges after allegedly shooting her adult daughter in the head late Sunday night in what police are calling a domestic assault.
Cacey Bright of Cape Girardeau has been charged with first-degree domestic assault and armed criminal action, both felonies. She is being held in the Cape Girardeau City Jail on a $1 million cash-only bond and is scheduled for a court appearance Thursday, May 15.

Victim in Critical Condition
Police responded to a reported shooting in the 1300 block of Kenwood Drive around 11:45 p.m. on May 11. Officers found a 21-year-old woman, later identified as Bright’s daughter, in the passenger seat of a vehicle with life-threatening injuries. She was rushed to a nearby hospital and remained in critical condition as of Tuesday morning, according to KFVS.
The Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office confirmed the victim’s identity as a local resident. Prosecutors noted the investigation is ongoing, stating that “charges may be amended to reflect the victim’s health.”
Suspect Claims Gun Discharged Accidentally
According to court documents, Bright told officers she was loading a magazine into a handgun when she “must have pulled the trigger” instead of hitting the magazine release. She claimed she was in the driver’s seat while her daughter sat in the front passenger seat.
When questioned about the evening’s events, Bright reportedly directed investigators to photos on her phone, which she said could provide a timeline. Authorities later recovered several images from the vehicle, including:
- Bright is handling a loaded pistol magazine
- Bright is holding a blue and pink handgun
- A final photo showing Bright pointing the loaded gun at the camera, finger on the trigger

Weapon, Ammunition Seized
During a search of the vehicle, police found:
- A blue and pink Glock 9mm with one round chambered and three rounds in the magazine
- Nine Blazer 9mm rounds and one Winchester 9mm round on the center console
- A spent shell casing in the passenger floorboard
- A possible bullet fragment on the front passenger seat
The investigation remains active, with authorities considering additional charges depending on the victim’s medical outcome.
