Man Who Died by Suicide at Reno Casino Linked to Murder of ‘Beloved Mother

A man who died by suicide at a Reno, Nevada casino has been connected to the killing of a woman in California, according to authorities. The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a statement from the Yuba City Police Department in California. The timing of when the man was discovered remains unclear.

After finding the man, Reno police requested that Yuba City police conduct a welfare check on a woman. On Sunday, August 25, officers responded to her apartment, where they found her deceased. Police are investigating the case as a murder-suicide but have not provided further details on the connection between the two individuals.

The woman’s identity has not been officially released by police, but she was identified by loved ones as 38-year-old Catalina Aceves through a GoFundMe campaign created to cover her funeral expenses. The Sutter County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Aceves’ identity, stating she was killed on August 25, according to ABC 10.

“Cathy was a cherished mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and best friend,” Marisela Aceves wrote on the GoFundMe page. “She was a happy, soulful, and spiritual woman who was a guiding light to everyone that had the pleasure of having her in their life.” As of Thursday, September 5, the fundraiser had raised over $21,000.

Police have stated that the circumstances leading to the deaths are still under investigation. However, they added, “At this time, no other suspects are believed to be involved, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.”
