Maryland man accused of throwing 1-year-old down stairs and out window

A 23-year-old man in Maryland has been arrested after authorities say he violently assaulted a 1-year-old child by throwing the victim down a flight of stairs and later out of a window, according to law enforcement officials.

Kevin Alec Morris faces multiple charges, including attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, child abuse and reckless endangerment. The allegations stem from an incident reported in June at a home in Capitol Heights, a community just outside Washington, D.C.

According to a press release from the Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to Morris’ residence in the 4000 block of Southern Avenue on June 5 after receiving a report of an assault in progress.

Authorities allege that Morris first threw the young child down a set of steps inside the home. Investigators say the situation escalated further moments later. “He then rushed downstairs, picked up the victim, and barricaded himself inside a room,” cops wrote.

While inside the room, Morris allegedly took the child to a window and threw the victim outside. Police say the child landed in a trash can located outside the home. Despite the severity of the incident, authorities said the child was rescued. Officials have not publicly released information about the child’s condition.

After the incident, Morris reportedly fled the scene before deputies were able to take him into custody. Authorities said he remained at large for approximately nine months while a warrant for his arrest was active. According to officials, Morris was eventually located and arrested on March 25. Details about how investigators tracked him down were not included in the sheriff’s office announcement.

Police have not disclosed a possible motive behind the alleged attack, and officials have not clarified Morris’ relationship to the child. Additional details about the case remain limited, as a probable cause arrest affidavit outlining further information about the incident was not immediately available.

Court records indicate that Morris is currently represented by a public defender. It is not yet clear whether he has entered a plea in response to the charges. Authorities said Morris is being held at the Prince George’s County Jail without bond while the case moves forward through the legal process. His next scheduled court appearance is a preliminary hearing set for April 24.
