A Grafton man has been charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide after allegedly shooting his wife multiple times during a domestic dispute last week. Prosecutors filed charges Monday against 53-year-old Guy Jerome Paider, who also faces one count of first-degree recklessly endangering safety.
According to Grafton police, officers were called to a home on Lake Shore Road just before 4 p.m. Friday following reports of a violent domestic incident. When officers arrived, they heard a woman screaming inside a back bedroom, according to the criminal complaint.
One officer kicked open the door and ordered the occupants to come out with their hands visible. Moments later, the officer heard several gunshots. Police said Paider then came out of the bedroom and surrendered. Inside, officers found his wife suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to her abdomen, leg, and groin.
She was rushed to Aurora Medical Center and later airlifted to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa, where she remained in stable condition as of Monday afternoon. A Kimber 1911 semi-automatic handgun was recovered from the bedroom, investigators said to ABC affiliate WISN.
According to the victim’s statement to police, the attack occurred shortly after she returned home from a meeting with a lawyer to discuss her divorce. Paider allegedly began questioning her about what she wanted from the divorce, but she refused to discuss it in front of their child.
She told police that Paider sent their child to another room and then turned violent. “He sent the child to her room and then attacked me,” she said, according to the complaint. The woman began screaming for help, yelling, “Call 911.”
Paider allegedly carried her into the bedroom and threw her onto the carpet. “When I saw him, he opened his first drawer, where his underwear is, and he grabbed a gun. He said, ‘Look at me, look at me, so you can see me when I shoot you,’” she told investigators.
The complaint states that Paider fired at her as officers entered the home. Police quickly took him into custody without further incident. Authorities later confirmed that Paider is a former West Allis firefighter and is currently licensed as a nurse in Wisconsin.
The shooting has left the small Grafton community shocked, particularly given Paider’s history of public service. He remains in custody as prosecutors move forward with charges. If convicted, Paider faces a potential life sentence for attempted homicide.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials say the couple’s child was unharmed during the incident.
