Oklahoma Man Beats Wife to Death Two Weeks After Wedding and Hides Body in Car Trunk

A Tulsa jury has convicted a man of the first-degree murder of his wife, whom he beat to death and then concealed in the trunk of her car alongside a highway earlier this year. Chris Morland was found guilty of the killing of Cassidy Ritchie, a woman he had married just weeks before her tragic disappearance in late 2023.

The trial concluded with the jury recommending a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Morland is scheduled for formal sentencing on Monday, October 20th. The verdict brought a palpable sense of relief to the victim’s family, who attended every day of the proceedings.

They expressed that while the conviction delivers a measure of justice, it cannot restore the life that was lost. Cassidy Ritchie was reported missing by her family in January 2024. Her body was discovered days later in the back of her own vehicle, which was abandoned on the side of Highway 412.

She was covered with a pile of clothes. Her family had immediately expressed suspicion toward Morland, beliefs that were ultimately validated by the evidence presented in court. During closing arguments, prosecutors displayed harrowing photographs of Ritchie’s body in the trunk, stating to the jury, “This is what Chris Morland thought of his wife.”

They further illustrated the brutality of the crime by presenting images documenting the fifty-five separate injuries on her body, pointedly asking, “What part of this was an accident?” The defense team argued that the crime amounted to manslaughter, contending that Morland killed his wife in the heat of passion during a physical altercation.

Prosecutors forcefully rejected this characterization, detailing a deliberate and savage attack. They asserted that Morland made a conscious choice to inflict blow after blow and subsequently decided to hide her body. District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler underscored the horrific nature of the crime.

“This is the first time I’ve ever tried a case where someone literally beat a human being to death with their hands. Mr. Morland deserves every single ounce of the life without the possibility of parole punishment that he got. This is one of the most horrific murders I’ve ever had to deal with,” said District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler.

Following the verdict, Cassidy’s mother, Cheryl Ritchie, shared a heartfelt tribute to her daughter and a pointed message to the convicted killer. “Cassidy was just always looking out for me. She would bring me my lunch when I was at work, she’d run and get me a Dr. Pepper, she would say, ‘I got you, Momma, I got you.’ She would say that all the time.

It was so cute. I’m going to turn that around and say, Chris Morland, we got you,” said Cheryl Ritchie, Cassidy’s mom. The trial also revealed Morland’s extensive criminal history, including an admission that he served eighteen years in a California prison for a prior conviction. He had also been arrested in Texas in 2019 for assault and had outstanding warrants for being a felon in possession of a firearm and for a parole violation.
