Pennsylvania Man Allegedly Killed Ex-Girlfriend Minutes After Breakup

Emotions ran high in a Pennsylvania courtroom as Michael Dutkiewicz faced the first day of his murder trial, accused of killing his girlfriend, Alyssa Wiest, a 25-year-old microbiologist from West Conshohocken. Prosecutors, led by District Attorney Kevin Steele, allege Dutkiewicz acted with intent after Wiest ended their relationship only minutes before her death.

According to the prosecution, Dutkiewicz searched online for instructions on how to load and fire a revolver moments before the fatal shooting. Investigators say he used Wiest’s own gun, firing multiple times just before 12:15 a.m. on May 18, with the final shot striking her in the head as she collapsed on the sidewalk near her home.

Prosecutors argue the crime was deliberate, claiming Dutkiewicz could not accept the breakup. They presented witness testimony from Wiest’s older sister, who told the court that Alyssa had planned to end the relationship weeks earlier but delayed the decision until after a May trip paid for by Dutkiewicz’s family.

“She didn’t want to ruin the vacation,” the sister testified, adding that Alyssa had been “determined to move on.” Several neighbors also took the stand, describing the sound of gunfire and Wiest’s terrified screams as she ran for her life down Moorehead Avenue.

Jurors were shown footage from police body cameras capturing the scene moments after the shooting, including the first responding officer’s arrival. The prosecution’s final witness of the day was a local bartender who served the couple of hours before the incident. He testified that he poured only two rounds of drinks for their table, but recalled Dutkiewicz shouting to get his attention twice.

“He was a little rude, but not drunk enough for me to cut him off,” the bartender said. While the defense is not disputing that Dutkiewicz fired the shots, his attorney argues the act was not premeditated. Instead, they claim the killing resulted from “emotional chaos and heavy drinking” following an unexpected breakup.

They also noted that Wiest’s blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal driving limit, suggesting the situation spiraled out of control. “This case is about heartbreak and impulse, not calculation,” the defense told the court.

The prosecution is expected to continue presenting witnesses through Wednesday before resting its case. Video evidence from Wiest’s home security system is expected to play a key role in reconstructing the final moments before the shooting. The jury could begin deliberations as early as Thursday as the tragic case continues to unfold.
