Florida Mom Threatens Another Mom “In the Face” on First Day of School

The first day of school turned chaotic for a Miami-Dade mother who was arrested after allegedly threatening another parent with a firearm during morning drop-off at Arcola Lake Elementary. Erika Letisha Cruz, 39, now faces multiple charges, including exhibiting a weapon on school property, aggravated assault with a firearm, and aggravated battery, according to arrest records.

Authorities say the incident occurred as Cruz was dropping her child off at school. The confrontation reportedly began after words were exchanged with another parent. The mother of a disabled student said Cruz’s vehicle approached her while she was walking her son, honking and shouting, “hurry the f— up.” The woman told officers that Cruz then got out of her car holding a purse and threatened her directly: “say one more word and I am going to shoot you in the face.”

Local CBS affiliate WSVN reported, after the threat, Cruz reportedly returned to her vehicle and drove to the school. Law enforcement detained her, and inside her purse, investigators found a Sig Sauer P238 handgun loaded with four rounds. Cruz was booked into jail and later appeared before Judge Mindy Glazer, who appointed a public defender.

“I guess she didn’t have a good first day of school,” Judge Glazer said during the hearing. “All I can say is what a terrible way for your child to begin the first day of school with mom getting hauled off to jail. You know, you have to be an adult and set a good example, and keep your… you need to relax. It’s very upsetting.”

During the hearing, Cruz’s child’s father disputed details of the arrest, prompting questions about some of the charges. A Miami-Dade Schools Police officer involved in the arrest testified that the weapon charge should be classified as possession on school property and that the alleged battery involving the vehicle appeared unintentional.

Ultimately, Judge Glazer did not find probable cause for the aggravated battery charge and granted Cruz pre-trial release. She offered a final cautionary remark: “Ma’am, I don’t know what happened there, obviously things, hopefully things go better your next week dropping off your child to school.”

The incident underscores the intense stress some parents face during school drop-offs, but authorities emphasized that threats involving firearms on school property are taken extremely seriously, regardless of the circumstances. Cruz remains released ahead of trial while authorities continue to process the case.
