Florida Man Killed and Sexually Assaulted Neighbor Before Attending High School Classes

A Florida man will spend the rest of his life in prison for the brutal 2018 killing of his 33-year-old neighbor, a family friend he sexually assaulted and stabbed to death before heading to school as if nothing had happened.

Fifth Judicial Circuit Judge Mary P. Hatcher sentenced 24-year-old Tyler Ryan Hirsch to life in a state correctional facility for the murder of Melody Victoria Bennett, authorities announced.

The sentence followed Hirsch’s open plea in March, a guilty plea without a negotiated sentence resulting in convictions for first-degree murder, attempted sexual battery while armed, burglary of a dwelling while armed, and three counts of battery on a law enforcement officer.

According to the State Attorney’s Office, the attack occurred just one day after Bennett’s 33rd birthday. On Jan. 25, 2018, deputies from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office responded to Bennett’s home on County Road 625 after receiving a report of a deceased woman.

Bennett’s brother, who had gone to check on her after several days of no contact, found her lying face-down in the living room. Investigators determined Bennett had suffered “numerous stab wounds” and died from “multiple sharp force injuries” between the night of Jan. 21 and Jan. 22.

The autopsy also revealed defensive wounds on her hands and arms, indicating she fought back against her attacker. During a neighborhood canvass, deputies spoke with 16-year-old Hirsch. He acknowledged knowing Bennett but denied involvement.

However, investigators later learned that on the day Bennett’s body was discovered, before police had publicly disclosed the manner of death, Hirsch told his school bus driver that “a woman was stabbed to death.”

Hirsch’s teacher also recalled that on the morning of Jan. 22, he asked to visit the nurse for a bandage, displaying “a large laceration and other minor cuts” on his hand. When questioned, he said he “didn’t want to talk about it” and that it was “personal.” Hirsch’s account of his interactions with Bennett shifted during subsequent police interviews.

DNA evidence collected from the scene later matched him, leading to his arrest in January 2019. “This was a senseless and horrific act of violence that devastated a family and shocked an entire neighborhood,” Fifth Judicial Circuit Chief Assistant State Attorney Walter Forgie said.

“We are grateful to the investigators who worked tirelessly on this case and to the judge for today’s life sentence, which ensures that the defendant will never again be in a position to harm another innocent person.”
