An 18-year-old employee at a Burger King on Jacksonville’s Westside was shot and killed Saturday night after stepping in to break up a fight between two men inside the restaurant. A Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office arrest report identifies the victim as Matthew Jackson, a high school senior who had been working his shift when violence erupted.
Police said one of the men involved in the fight was also shot but is expected to survive. Officers arrested 28-year-old Dawud Burritt the following day in connection with the double shooting at the Burger King on Blanding Boulevard near Collins Road.
According to the arrest report, Burritt walked into the restaurant and was recognised by 33-year-old Ray Cummings Jr. Cummings later told investigators that he and Burritt had been close friends for eight years but had not spoken in about a year because of a falling-out. He said he tried to shake Burritt’s hand, but the two began arguing, and the exchange quickly turned into a physical fight.
Witnesses told police that Jackson stepped in to try to separate the two men. They said Burritt then pulled out a gun, prompting everyone nearby to run. Two shots were heard, and witnesses reported seeing Burritt flee from the restaurant.
Officers arrived to find Jackson dead near the rear drive-thru window. Cummings was discovered outside the building with a gunshot wound. Burritt was arrested the following day and is now facing charges of armed burglary, second-degree murder, and attempted second-degree murder.
Jackson’s mother told News4JAX that her son was a senior at Riverside High School and planned to join the Marines after graduating in May. He was scheduled to be sworn in next week. She described him on social media as a “good soul” and expressed gratitude for the community’s support and prayers, asking that people continue to keep the family in their thoughts during this painful time.
The restaurant remained closed on Monday as the investigation continued. A spokesperson for Burger King released a statement saying, “We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and our hearts go out to the family, friends, and Team Members impacted.” The spokesperson added that the franchisee is cooperating with authorities and offering counselling to employees, emphasising that safety remains a top priority.
Police are urging anyone with information to call 904-630-0500 or contact CrimeStoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS to remain anonymous. A GoFundMe account has been created to help support Jackson’s family as they navigate their loss.
