Arizona Father Arrested After 6-Week-Old Son Dies from Severe Head Injuries

Tragic new details have emerged in the case of a Mesa father accused of fatally abusing his 6-week-old son, leaving the community in shock. Mesa police arrested 19-year-old Arnold Barney on charges of first-degree murder and child abuse after his infant son died Tuesday morning from injuries sustained the night before.

Emergency crews were called around 8:30 p.m. Monday to an apartment complex near Southern Avenue and Alma School Road. Responding officers found the baby in “respiratory distress.” He was rushed to a hospital, where staff observed visible bruising and severe internal injuries, including a brain bleed. Despite efforts to save him, the child was pronounced dead early Tuesday.

Court documents released Wednesday provide a chilling account of what led to Barney’s arrest. According to police, the child’s mother had left the infant in Barney’s care while she and relatives walked to a nearby grocery store around 7:30 p.m. She placed the baby on their bed with a small blanket tucked around him before leaving.

When the family returned about an hour later, they found Barney sitting silently on the couch while the baby remained in the bedroom. The infant was tightly swaddled, bruised, and struggling to breathe. Alarmed relatives quickly called 911. When the baby’s mother asked Barney what happened, he gave no response, local CBS affiliate KTVK reported.

Investigators say the mother told officers Barney was unemployed, spending most of his time playing video games or watching videos. She described him as volatile, admitting he often became enraged when confronted about not helping with childcare, even punching holes in walls during arguments, Phoenix Fox affiliate KSAZ reported.

Initially, Barney claimed he had been napping on the couch while holding the baby, who allegedly rolled off his chest and landed face-first on the floor. But under questioning, Barney’s story changed. Police say he eventually admitted to slapping his son across the face six times out of frustration when the infant would not stop crying, despite being fed and changed.

He then left the baby on the bed and returned to the couch. Court records state Barney expressed regret afterward, telling detectives he wished he could apologize to the baby’s mother and that he was “sorry for killing the child.” He was booked into the Maricopa County Jail. Neighbors described the heartbreaking scene as police carried the tiny infant out of the apartment.

“You could tell it was a newborn, it was really small,” said neighbor Jesus Anaya, who is expecting his third child. “It’s sad. I’m having a baby born in November and to think if something happened to my baby, it would destroy me.”

Forensic psychologist John Delatorre noted that stress, immaturity, and lack of coping skills often play a role in such tragedies. “They’re always supposed to be there protecting the family… and when they aren’t, that can also lead to a level of stress,” he explained. The case remains under investigation as the Mesa community mourns the life of a child taken far too soon.
