A tragic overnight shooting in Augusta that killed a 3-year-old boy and left his mother wounded has taken new turns as authorities released the victims’ identities and confirmed two others were also targeted.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded around 1 a.m. Wednesday to reports of gunfire at 1102 New Savannah Road. When officers arrived, they discovered 40-year-old Cherrelle Murray and her son, 3-year-old Bryson Murray, suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both victims were rushed to Wellstar MCG Health. Despite emergency treatment, Bryson was pronounced dead at 2:20 a.m. by Dr. Robyn Hatley. An autopsy has been scheduled. Officials have not disclosed Cherrelle Murray’s current condition. The case is now in the hands of the Criminal Investigation Division as detectives work to determine what led to the deadly attack.
Investigators later confirmed that two additional people inside the residence at the time were also victims of aggravated assault. They were identified as 39-year-old Julie Lace and 40-year-old Willie Lewis. While neither Lace nor Lewis was physically injured, both were placed in danger when the residence was struck by gunfire.
Detectives are seeking to question Willie Lewis, who has not yet been located. Authorities said Lewis is known to frequent the Allen Homes area. He is described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing approximately 175 pounds. Investigators emphasized that Lewis has not been charged with a crime but may possess information crucial to the case.
Another individual, 30-year-old Shynice Lashay Cannida, was also listed as wanted for questioning earlier in the investigation. Cannida has since been located, interviewed, and released. The sheriff’s office has urged anyone with information about Lewis’s whereabouts to come forward.
