A Wichita neighborhood is in shock after an 80-year-old woman was fatally stabbed, and her daughter was taken into custody for first-degree murder. Police say the attack happened early Friday morning on Crowley Street, leaving residents horrified by the violent scene that unfolded outside their homes.
Officers responded just before 8 a.m. after multiple 911 calls reported a woman covered in blood running through the neighborhood. When police arrived, they found 80-year-old Anita Avers suffering from multiple stab wounds inside her home. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she later died.
Investigators say Avers’ 47-year-old daughter, Angelynn Mock, was found outside the house with cuts on her hands. She was taken into custody and booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on charges of first-degree murder, according to local CBS affiliate KMOV.
Neighbor Alyssa Castro said she and her boyfriend were sitting in their vehicle across the street when the chaos began. “There was a woman who approached our vehicle with like blood, like her hands were filled, her body was filled with blood, asking to call 911,” Castro said.
According to Castro, the woman—later identified as Mock—borrowed her boyfriend’s phone to call for help before running back toward the home. “I asked her if she was okay, and she was pretty shaken up, and she seemed scared, and she just ran off,” she recalled.
Dispatch records from Sedgwick County indicated that the caller told operators she had stabbed her mother “to save herself,” suggesting the suspect initially claimed self-defense. However, police have not confirmed any details supporting that claim, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Inside the home, officers found signs of a violent struggle. Avers was discovered in her bed with multiple stab wounds, while her daughter appeared to have minor injuries consistent with the altercation. Police have not yet determined what led to the deadly confrontation.
Castro said the event left her shaken but grateful she and her boyfriend were nearby to call for help. “I’m just glad we were able to help, you know what I mean,” she said. “We never know what anyone is going through. This happened randomly, but as long as we were able to get 911 and see what we can do, that’s all I really care about.”
Mock remains held without bond as detectives continue to investigate what they describe as a deeply tragic case of domestic violence. Police have not released further details about what may have triggered the fatal attack.
