Alabama Woman Charged With Torturing and Attempting to Smother Her Crying Baby

A Phenix City woman is facing two felony charges after investigators reported that she attempted to kill her four-month-old baby. Court documents filed Monday in Lee County District Court detail a series of disturbing allegations that led to the arrest of 28-year-old Mireira Johana Garcia-Lucero.

According to the filings, Garcia-Lucero is charged with Attempted Murder and Torture or Willful Abuse of a Child. Investigators say the incident occurred around 1 a.m. on Monday, November 24, 2025, inside a residence in Lee County.

The felony complaint for attempted murder outlines claims that Garcia-Lucero held her infant in the air and shook the child “in a reckless manner,” placed blankets and pillows over the baby “in an effort to suffocate it,” and grabbed the infant by the throat several times “in an attempt to suffocate it and inflict harm.”

A separate complaint expands on the alleged abuse, stating that Garcia-Lucero, as the parent, “did torture, willfully abuse, willfully mistreat, cruelly beat, or otherwise willfully maltreat” the child by shaking the baby, placing blankets and pillows on top of the infant, and grabbing the baby by the throat.

The documents do not indicate whether anyone witnessed the incident or how authorities learned of the alleged attack, local WRBL. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday afternoon that Garcia-Lucero had been arrested and booked on both felony charges. Deputies confirmed she was taken into custody shortly after the allegations were presented to investigators, and she is now being held as the case proceeds through the court system.

Authorities have not released information about the condition of the infant, and officials have not said whether the child required medical treatment or hospitalization. No additional details about the circumstances surrounding the incident have been made public. Investigators also have not disclosed a possible motive.

The case remains active as deputies continue gathering evidence and interviewing individuals connected to the family. Prosecutors are expected to review the full investigative file before the case moves toward preliminary hearings. If convicted, Garcia-Lucero could face years in prison for each of the felony charges.

The Sheriff’s Office has asked the public for assistance as the investigation continues. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Lee County Sheriff’s Office at 334-749-5651.

Residents of the area have expressed shock over the allegations, as cases involving such young children are rare and often leave communities searching for answers. For now, authorities say their focus remains on determining exactly what happened inside the home during the early morning hours of November 24.
