6-Year-Old Nonverbal Indiana Child Allegedly Drowns in Neighbor’s Pool

A heartbreaking tragedy struck the Granger, Indiana, community this past weekend, as a 6-year-old boy, identified as Joshua Nizigiyimana, drowned after being reported missing from his home. The St. Joseph County Police Department said officers responded to a call around 8:30 p.m. on Friday on Conestoga Court regarding a missing child.

Joshua, who was described as non-verbal and autistic, had last been seen near his home before disappearing. Within 20 minutes of arriving on the scene, police located Joshua unresponsive in a neighbor’s backyard pool on Lariat Lane, a short distance from where he was reported missing.

Emergency responders immediately began CPR and transported the child to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, Joshua was later pronounced dead. Authorities have confirmed that Joshua’s death has been ruled an accidental drowning.

“Our hearts are with the Nizigiyimana family as they endure an unimaginable loss,” said St. Joseph County Sheriff Bill Redman in a statement following the incident. “We also extend our support to the neighbors, community members, our officers, and all first responders involved in this heartbreaking case.”

The devastating news has deeply affected the local community, including the staff and students at Horizon Elementary School, where Joshua was a student. In response, school officials have organized a donation page to support the Nizigiyimana family during this difficult time.

Funds raised will go toward funeral expenses, meals, and other immediate needs the family may have in the wake of their loss. The school community and local residents have already begun offering their condolences and assistance, showing a strong outpouring of compassion and solidarity.

Authorities have reminded residents about the importance of water safety, particularly for families with children who have special needs. The tragic incident underscores the vulnerability of young children, especially those with conditions such as autism, and highlights the need for enhanced vigilance around water hazards.

The investigation into the events leading up to Joshua’s disappearance and death has concluded, with no signs of foul play reported. The incident remains a painful reminder of how quickly accidents can occur, even in familiar neighborhood settings.

As the Granger community grieves, support continues to grow for the Nizigiyimana family, whose loss has touched hearts across the region.
