42-Year-Old Driver Dies from Injuries in Week-Old Aiken County Truck Wreck

A 42-year-old Aiken County man succumbed to injuries Sunday, one week after a devastating single-vehicle wreck on Old Barnwell Road, authorities confirmed. Wade Sweat III of Windsor was critically injured the morning of June 2 when his 1994 Chevrolet truck veered off the 1400 block of Old Barnwell Road near Stillwater Road.

According to Coroner Darryl Ables, Sweat’s truck drifted off the left side of the roadway, overcorrected, then careened off the right side before overturning and slamming into a fence. Paramedics rushed Sweat to Wellstar MCG Health, where he fought for his life before passing away at 5:45 p.m. Sunday.

The Aiken County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol are still investigating the crash. As news of Sweat’s death spread, grieving loved ones flooded social media with emotional tributes. Danni Curr, a close friend, shared a heartbreaking farewell on Facebook.

“You held on as long as you could,” Curr wrote. “The day of your accident was one of the worst days I have had. I walked up to your truck and saw you—my heart stopped. Mine and your relationship was different than everyone else’s. We were best friends. … I’m going to take care of your sister. Please watch over us! This life isn’t going to be the same without you in it.”

Friends described Sweat as a loyal and caring man whose sudden loss has left a void in their lives. No further details about the crash have been released, but investigators are working to determine if speed, impairment, or road conditions played a role. Funeral arrangements for Sweat have not yet been announced.
