Keke Palmer recently shared the challenges her fame introduced into her custody dispute with ex-partner Darius Jackson, describing the experience as “unhealthy.” In an interview with People, the Emmy-winning actress opened up about how being in the public eye complicated her personal relationships, especially following the birth of her son.
“Having a baby was a big stressor,” Palmer, 31, explained. Balancing her high-profile career with the responsibilities of motherhood added intense pressure to her life, which, she said, took a toll on her relationships, both romantic and otherwise. “Too many voices get in,” Palmer noted, adding, “It can make everybody else not trust you.”
Public tensions between Palmer and Jackson surfaced in July 2023 when Jackson, a former NFL star, criticized her for wearing a sheer Givenchy dress on social media, commenting, “It’s the outfit tho… you a mom.” Their disagreements escalated, and in November 2023, Palmer accused Jackson of domestic abuse, which he denied, leading the two to court for a custody battle over their son.
Reflecting on that difficult period, Palmer admitted, “It got so out of control… the only way I knew how to bring order was through the court.” Her decision to seek legal assistance helped establish boundaries and clarity, allowing her to move forward in a healthier direction.
Following a period of court-ordered mediation, the two eventually reached an agreement on joint custody, a resolution that has brought Palmer a sense of peace. “I feel very at ease now knowing things are under control,” she shared. Their efforts to co-parent amicably are evident, as Jackson even attended her 31st birthday celebration in August, signaling a willingness to put their differences aside for their son’s sake.
Palmer’s upcoming memoir, Master of Me: The Secret to Controlling Your Narrative, releasing on November 19, delves into her personal journey through these challenging experiences. Her key takeaway? “Walking away is the only way,” she advised, underscoring her commitment to prioritizing stability for herself and her son.
