Keith Urban Opens Up About Nicole Kidman’s Emotional ‘Ups and Downs’ in Rare Candid Comment

Keith Urban took a heartfelt moment to express his appreciation for the support fans have shown his family following the recent passing of his mother-in-law, Janelle Ann Kidman. During an appearance on TODAY on October 30, the country star thanked fans for their condolences and shared how their messages of support have helped him and his wife, actress Nicole Kidman, cope with their loss.

Host Hoda Kotb acknowledged the difficult time for Urban and Kidman, saying, “I know you were supposed to be on our plaza a while ago and then you had an unfortunate death; Nicole’s mom passed away. We just want to send our condolences and also, how is she and how are you guys doing?” Urban, who had just performed hits like Chuck Taylors, Messed Up as Me, and Somewhere in My Car, responded gratefully.

“Thank you very much, and thanks for having us back,” he replied. “It’s up and down; it comes in waves. But the outpouring’s been amazing. So thank you, everyone, for that. We really appreciate it.” Urban’s words reflected the mix of emotions that often accompany grief and underscored how much the messages of support have meant to him and his family.

Kidman first shared the news of her mother’s passing on September 7, leaving the Venice Film Festival early to be with her family. Kidman had been set to accept an award for Best Actress for her role in Babygirl, directed by Halina Reijn. In her absence, Reijn read a prepared statement from Kidman, where she dedicated the award to her mother.

“I’m in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her,” Kidman’s note read. “She shaped me, she guided me, and she made me. I am beyond grateful that I get to say her name to all of you through Halina.” Kidman concluded her statement with a touching line: “The collision of life and art is heartbreaking, and my heart is broken.”

Urban’s appearance on TODAY served as both a performance and a sincere expression of gratitude, giving fans a glimpse into how he and Kidman are managing through a challenging period. The couple’s openness in sharing this moment speaks to the depth of their connection with their fans and to the enduring impact of Janelle Ann Kidman’s legacy.
