Oscar-Nominated Film Editor Don Zimmerman Dies at 81

Don Zimmerman, the celebrated film editor known for his work on cinematic staples like Rocky III, Night at the Museum, and Men in Black 3, has passed away at the age of 81. His death was confirmed by Perception PR, who paid tribute with a touching message on social media: “Rest in Peace Don Zimmerman … He will be greatly missed.”

Zimmerman’s career in Hollywood spanned more than four decades, during which he helped shape the pacing and emotional impact of some of the industry’s most memorable films. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Zimmerman entered the entertainment industry in the early 1970s and quickly established himself as a skilled craftsman in film editing.

His early work included editorial roles on critically acclaimed films such as The Landlord, Harold and Maude, The Last of Sheila, The Nickel Ride, Shampoo, and Bound for Glory. These foundational experiences set the stage for what would become a remarkable career.

Zimmerman’s breakthrough came with his collaboration with director Hal Ashby on the 1978 Vietnam War drama Coming Home, starring Jane Fonda and Jon Voight. His work on the film earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Film Editing, marking a pivotal milestone in his professional journey. He later teamed up with Ashby again on the 1979 classic Being There, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

Over the years, Zimmerman’s editing talent touched a wide variety of genres, from action and comedy to drama and fantasy. His impressive résumé includes credits on A Change of Seasons, Barbarosa, Best Friends, Rocky III, Rocky IV, Cobra, The Prince of Tides, Leap of Faith, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Nutty Professor, Liar Liar, Patch Adams, The Cat in the Hat, Flight of the Phoenix, Rush Hour 3, Jumper, Marmaduke, and RED 2, among many others.

In 2023, Zimmerman was honored with the American Cinema Editors’ prestigious Career Achievement Award, recognizing his enduring impact on the craft of film editing and his mentorship within the editing community. His death marks the loss of a revered figure in Hollywood’s post-production world.
