Sean “Diddy” Combs, the embattled music mogul facing a series of serious federal charges, has now claimed that his ongoing mental health challenges are impeding his ability to properly fight his legal battle. According to newly obtained court documents, Diddy’s legal team is pushing for a Columbia University doctor to testify in his defense, arguing that mental health issues, potentially worsened by alcohol, played a role in his alleged actions.
People reports that Diddy’s defense is attempting to introduce expert testimony to explain that his mental condition at the time of the alleged crimes may have impaired his judgment and self-control. The documents suggest that alcohol use, coupled with underlying mental health concerns, could have significantly affected his decision-making abilities.

However, prosecutors are strongly contesting the request, arguing that the proposed expert never directly treated Combs. Instead, the doctor’s testimony would be based on general findings from other patients, not on firsthand knowledge of Diddy’s specific mental state. That, they say, undermines the credibility and relevance of the testimony in court.
Prosecutors have also stated that Diddy’s legal team failed to provide a timely notice that they would use mental health or substance-related evidence in his defense. This lack of procedural compliance could block the testimony from being admitted altogether.

“The doctor has never treated the rapper and would only base their testimony on other patients,” prosecutors emphasized in their filing, asserting that such generalized testimony should not influence the jury’s determination of guilt.
Diddy’s legal troubles began making headlines in 2024, when federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security raided his properties in Los Angeles and Miami. The investigation that followed resulted in multiple charges, including serious counts of sex trafficking and prostitution-related offenses.

The consequences, if convicted, could be life-altering for the 54-year-old artist and entrepreneur. If found guilty of sex trafficking, he could face a minimum of 15 years behind bars, with additional charges potentially adding a decade or more to his sentence.
As the case develops, the court’s decision on whether to admit the mental health testimony could play a pivotal role in the trial’s outcome. For now, Diddy remains behind bars, his legal team battling on multiple fronts — from challenging the admissibility of expert witnesses to mitigating the damage done by what prosecutors argue is an overwhelming body of evidence.
