Daytime talk show The View took an unexpected turn into comedic chaos when longtime host Whoopi Goldberg pretended to fall asleep during a segment about Meghan Markle’s continued use of her royal title. The April 30 episode saw Goldberg jokingly disengage from the discussion, leaving her co-hosts in stitches as she offered sarcastic commentary on the topic.
The debate centered around a recent social media post by Meghan’s friend, podcast host Jamie Kern Lima, who shared a photo of a gift basket she received from the Duchess. The basket, filled with jars of Meghan’s homemade jam, was accompanied by a note signed, “With the compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex.”

The note reignited controversy over Meghan’s use of the “HRH” style, despite stepping down from official royal duties in 2020. As the panel launched into the Hot Topics segment, Goldberg made her feelings clear, dramatically shouting, “Damn them,” in mock outrage, told Daily Express.
She then asked the panel whether it was “a bad look for Meghan to still refer to herself as a Royal,” before sarcastically adding, “Wake me up when you’re done,” and leaning back in her chair as if asleep. The moment caused laughter among co-hosts Sara Hines, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, and Alyssa Farah-Griffin.

But Goldberg wasn’t finished. Interrupting mid-discussion, she said, “Can I just ask a dumb question that I just woke up for?” before weighing in on the controversy. “I think that it’s cringier that her friend aired it publicly,” Goldberg commented, suggesting that the decision to post the gift online may have caused more harm than Meghan’s note itself.
The backlash to the jam basket prompted a clarification from Prince Harry and Meghan’s spokesperson. “Harry and Meghan retain their HRH titles; however, by agreement, they do not use them for commercial purposes,” they said. They further explained that the photo was not recent: “As Jamie notes in her teaser, she has had the jam for over a year.”
The spokesperson emphasized that the note was part of a personal gift and not a violation of royal protocols, stating, “While they do not publicly use ‘HRH,’ this was a personal gift, and their titles remain. This context should be accurately reflected in coverage.” Despite the clarification, it was Goldberg’s theatrical disinterest that stole the spotlight — and left viewers wondering what she’ll snooze through next.
